album info | lyrics | about Maggie Longmire

This project is dedicated to everyone who has been fortunate enough to experience the unconditional love of Grandparents. The story of the "Granddaughters" begins in 1910 and moves through the first half of the 20th Century. "Granddaughters" is a celebration in song of two sisters and their half sister who grew up in the coalfields of East Tennessee. It is about their lives and their times. They were individually beautiful, uniquely different, equally charismatic, and highly resourceful. We knew them as Mother, Aunt Mary Lou, and Aunt Dorothy...   If you are a member of the baby boomer generation, the lives of your Parents and Grandparents bridged two centuries. Collectively they witnessed the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, two World Wars, and the Moon landing. Most of us that grew up in the 50's and 60's have fond memories of a less complicated and more secure time. The older we get the more we realize the influence they had on our lives and how much they loved us. "Granddaughters" is a tribute to our elders who taught us about family.
~JOHN LONGMIRE

I would like to thank all the musicians and singers who collaborated on this project. We have had an unusual opportunity to include so many talented people in the entity of Free Soil Farm. I have known and admired some of you for over 30 years - others are brand new. Thanks for your unique contribution to bring life to these songs. Thank you to RB Morris for the stirring vocals and ongoing support. My collaboration with "Jay Mann" has resulted in my deep appreciation for his talent and creativity on both sides of the mixing console. Although my brother John and I wrote these songs, my "brother" Jay arranged and enhanced each one with his creative touch. Thank you for your friendship as well as your masterful musical mind. I would also like to acknowledge the fans of this music and your
appreciation for the telling of the stories. Thank you for listening. I hope it is evident how important family is to us. Those close to us deserve special gratitude for their patience and support to see this project to fruition. Love to Jackie, Jennie, and Judy for generously allowing us the time to create. It made all the difference.
~MAGGIE LONGMIRE

I am fortunate and grateful to have known and worked with Maggie Longmire from whom new music flows like water from a spring. (Thank you Danny Gammon for introducing me to both Maggie and Malcolm Holcombe) This CD represents only a small sample of Maggie's diverse repertoire. It is especially gratifying to share it with others as it is all about her family in and around Campbell County from a bygone era. I would especially like to thank my wife Jennie for being so patient and accommodating as this project has progressed. Additional thanks to Stan White for managing live sound for Free Soil Farm.
